The Herald-Sun reports that 480 drivers tested positive for drugs in 2009 in New South Wales - up by 24 per cent from 2008.
"On average, that's one positive test for every 52 drivers pulled over by NSW Police Force roadside drug testing vans," Police Minister Michael Daley said today.
There was no mention about whether this was due to more testing vans being on the roads and/or for longer periods.
Those caught driving while affected by illegal drugs face a fine of up to $2000 and/or a nine month prison sentence for a first offence. Repeat offenders face a fine of up to $3000 and/or a 12 month prison sentence.
Roadside drug testing involves a driver licking the pad of a testing device and police can determine within minutes if you have recently taken cannabis, ecstasy or methamphetamines such as ice or speed.
