In an article in the Sydney Morning Herald, Hugh Mackay reports on the results of an experiment with 14 Newcastle pubs, which showed earlier closing hours resulted in a 30 per cent reduction in cases of street violence.
Mackay argues that although there are many contributing factors to alcohol abuse the only way to change behaviour and attitudes is by changing the circumstances that give rise to it. In this way it is similar to changing drink-driving or smoking.
Measures suggested are increasing the price of alcohol served after midnight, raising the drinking age, or closing bars at 2 am.
If you had to choose between one of these, which one would it be?
Reducing street violence
