Research using interviews with ecstasy users asked whether people would take all their drugs in reaction to being told sniffer dogs were close by and most did not choose this option. This doesn't mean it doesn't happen more than we know about, of course.

Another potential consequence of increased use of sniffer dogs is people deciding to use other drugs that are not detected instead. In some cases, these can be more likely to cause harm (eg. GHB).

Is it really an unusual response for a young person to consume all the drugs on their person when they are about to be searched using sniffer dogs! Regretfully it isn't. Well, we may not have had a spate of young people dying from such actions, but I doubt that she was the first nor the last to make such a desperate decision. Police...please be careful of your actions! This isn't a harm reduction strategy but increases the risk of harm.

Complicated issue. It seems to me that there might be an initial surge in arrests as a result of sniffer dogs, but that this would eventually decrease as a result of people finding ways to take drugs and avoid being arrested. I can't imagine it deterring many people.
