Listen to: Sounds and substances

What role has drugs played in music culture through the ages?

Listen to FBi does drugs where inthemix.com.au General Manager Tim Hardaker discusses the following:

  • What part do drugs play in music culture (all genres)?
  • Obviously music is created for its own intrinsic purpose, but how much is some music created to make a drug experience better?
  • What sounds go best with which substances?
  • How has this changed since the sixties/seventies, or has it changed at all?
  • How have the changing drugs changed music – eg LSD in the seventies versus ecstasy / speed/ ice now?
  • Some DJs / promoters have complained that party goers are too out of it to appreciate the music,  is this a small minority or is it the majority .. why do we care ..?

What's your take on it?

well ill have a go at this , drugs and music have gone together for many years . music is in essentence here for two reasons , ethier for escapism or to provavy a message or meaning . for egample in the porpose of techno music , there is no essential meaning it is simply there to enhance the atmostphere of the club or festival .

exactacy for egample is a popular party drug because again it is used to enhance the overall feel of the expirence . with other kinds of music such as acustic music tends to cling to drugs such as marjiunia because it gives a relaxing feeling .

so drugs is simply a way to try to enhance music even though in my opinion it defeats the purpose

The link between drugs and music isn't original... and I reckon it is probably because deep down we haven't changed much.

Music is awesome and you can enjoy it anywhere totally straight.  Pick what makes you happy, sad, psyched up for exercise... whatever. There's heaps to choose from.

Socialising and dancing requires courage. Our social systems are highly evolved... but they haven't changed much for hundreds of years let alone the last fifty.

Drugs help us to lose our inhibitions, and experience music in a different way.  The way we can when we're in the shower, or driving along the road. The way that fits the "dance like no one's watching" dream.  The way that we wish we could be... because it is much more fun not to be wondering "do I look like a tit?"

As for DJs complaining about the crowd...  we're your bloody customers you tarts.  Love us like we love you.
