A 16-year old guy in Darwin is the first person in Australia to be charged and convicted for importing mephedrone in powder form. He was sentenced to six months' alternate detention, preventing him from leaving his home without permission from corrections officers. According to the magistrate, an adult who committed the same offence could expect to serve a jail term.
The boy paid $8,000 and was expected to pay a further $12,000 when one kilogram of the powder arrived.
The drug, also known as miaow and bubbles, remains legally available in several countries. However, in Australia, the drug from which mephedrone is derived is a prohibited substance.
The judge said the court had a duty to ensure sentences handed down in such cases acted as a deterrent to other young people who may also consider importing the emerging party drug.
Would reading this make you were less likely to use mephedrone?
