A recent episode of the US version of 60 minutes investigated the use of prescription drugs in US colleges - particuarly meds for ADHD (e.g. Ritalin, Adderall). Check out the preview here:
A study of nearly 2,000 undergrads at the University of Kentucky in the U.S. found that 34 percent said they had taken drugs like Ritalin without a prescription and that the percentage rose, as students got closer to graduation.
Nearly all the respondents said the drugs improved their scores by one or two letter grades. The down side is that the long-term effects of people without attention deficit disorder using such drugs are not know, but may include psychosis and addiction.
Would the rates be similar in Australia? Is using prescription meds like using steroids in sport? (i.e. 'cheating') Have you - or would you - use them?
