Alcohol myths v facts

Heard something about alcohol from a friend who heard about it from someone's sister's cousin? Sift myths from facts here.

Myth: Getting drunk is less harmful than taking drugs

Fact:

  • Alcohol is still a drug even though it is legal to purchase it if you are over 18.
  • Alcohol has many similarities to most illegal recreational drugs.
  • Alcohol alters your mental state, is 'addictive' and can cause a variety of health problems when abused.

Like any substance, both legal and illegal, knowing their effects on your body and not using to excess are very important. Used with other drugs, alcohol can increase their effects and lead to serious risk-taking including violent behaviour.
