GHB myths v facts

Heard something about GHB from a friend who heard about it from someone's sister's cousin? Sift myths from facts here.

Myth: If someone ODs on GHB, you should rub cocaine or speed into their gums

Fact: While it seems logical to reverse the effects of a depressant with a stimulant, it is not a very good idea. Depressant drugs (such as GHB) slow the heart down, while stimulants (such as cocaine) speed up heart rate. The combination may play havoc with your heart and result in heart attack.

Myth: GHB is a liquid form of ecstasy

Fact: GHB is actually a depressant, while ecstasy is a stimulant. Although GHB is sometimes called 'Liquid Ecstasy' on the street, it is actually nothing like ecstasy.

Myth: GHB is not addictive

Fact: It is both physically and psychologically addictive.

Myth: If someone takes too much GHB, they should be left to sleep it off

Fact: GHB overdoses may be fatal. Check out the GHB harm minimsation fact sheet for what to do if someone overdoses.
